Windows 98 = Flashback

I‘ve been sticking to Windows 7 for more than 4 years now, and it’s a really good operating system compared to other prior versions of Windows. The First OS that I’ve used was Windows 98 (as far I can recall or maybe Win95 :s) when I was in 3rd grade. My dad was abroad when I was little so I got a early computer and even a  even a Ymail account for e-mailing with my dad when I was 7!! I still remember that the Internet Charges were higher than our Monthly Power charges! So usage was pretty limited..

So I started tweaking my Machine for killing time, i.e Windows! I had very high-end games like Mario, RoadRash, Tomb Raider, etc 😛 and I had all my neighbors and friends at my home all the time playing those games. I learned all the basics and even tricks from that computer. That was the time when I was falling in love with Computers.. 😉 I’ve used Windows 98 till my first computer got destroyed! I don’t remember what happened but it was history when I reached like 7th grade.

Then I didn’t had a PC for like a year or something, and my second computer came up with Windows XP pre-installed.

Windows XP was actually my Childhood! I do almost everything I used to do when I had WinXP. I used WinXP on my main computer till 2010. And continued using on different computers (dads laptop, schools, cafes etc) for another two-three years, maybe.. I almost forgot how Win98 was like.. And suddenly yesterday I just randomly went to the Windows 7 settings and selected “Windows Classic” theme.. bhooyaa! My Life just went back to the 2000’s! Which really gave me the inspiration to write this blog 😉

win98

I just don’t know how to put them into words, but I just feel happy. 😉

 P.S: RIP #WinXP 😦 https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/enterprise/end-of-support.aspx

I have to say the WinClassic theme not only gave me memories to me, it also gave some memory to the CPU! ie. Windows is “kinda” running smoother now!

You can also try out the Windows Classic theme on your Windows 7

In Control Panel → Appearance and Personalization → Personalization → Basic Themes → Windows Classic.

I’m pretty sure it’ll take you back to your 2000’s! 🙂

Facebook pages shows (fake) likes of Deceased people

I was roaming around in my Facebook feed and suddenly I noticed something unusual.

My old Facebook friend “Thilaga Vathi” (https://www.facebook.com/thilagabindiya) who was deceased in a Fire accident (click here for the news) occurred in her rented house killing 4 people in the late 2012, re-appeared on my Facebook feed in late 2013 by liking the official facebook page of ‘Jai Ho’ movie! (https://www.facebook.com/JaiHoOnline). I was really surprised to see she “liked” the page which was created in November 17, 2013.

I wasn’t sure if someone else were using her account, so I asked her best friends (whom I know) and some random friends in her friend’s list. All of them said they don’t think no one else is using her profile and this could either be a bug or a merged page.

‘Jai Ho’ is a remake of the movie Tollywood movie Stalin. Sohail Khan, the director of the film announced his intention to remake the movie in late 2012 in the name of “Mental”. The title was only renamed to ‘Jai Ho’ in mid-2013. So to Obviously even if Thilaga have liked the page Mental, it can’t be migrated to the page Jai Ho (Facebook only allows to migrate pages of the same name).

So my best guess is that my friend had NOT liked the ‘Jai Ho’ page or any page which were possible be migrated. So how did this happen?

Facebook seems to remove Fake likes from many pages but incidents like this shows there’s still flaws in their system or Facebook itself is promoting pages with fake likes from in-active accounts.

Incidents like this is actually hurtful for victim’s loved ones. 😦

How to Fix Profile Pictures not showing on Facebook Messenger and Facebook App through Wi-Fi

If you’re having problem with viewing Profile pictures on Facebook Android Messenger and Facebook official app over Wi-Fi, try this.

I have seen many people facing this issue, It works well if you’re on Mobile Data. My Friend’s new Wi-FI also started acted like this. So I tried tweaking the settings and finally found the issue.

  1. First Connect to your Wi-Fi Connection.
  2. Open Your WiFi Settings
Settings > WiFi > Long press on the Connection name > Modify Network
  3. Select Advanced Settings
  4. Change “IP Settings” from DHCP to “Static

  5. Change the DNS to 8.8.8.8 and DNS2 to 8.8.4.4.
This is the main step. Change the DNS to 8.8.8.8 In most cases, when you delete the default DNS, these numbers are automatically filled
  6. Select “Save” That’s all! Go to your Facebook app and verify that it’s working. If you’re still facing this problem or any question about the above instruction. You can ask them in the comments.

P.S: If you’re below Android version 4.0 (ICS) changing the DNS option is a little different, I skipped it because majority of the Android phones are now 4.0+. You can Also change the DNS of your Router to 8.8.8.8 to fix this issue. Refer the user manual of your Router to know how to change it.

Google Street View to Ernakulam?!

Google Street View is a technology featured in Google Maps that provides panoramic views from positions along many streets in the world. It’s the best way to explore a city/place in detail.

Google SV was introduced in Mid of 2008 which was a revolutionary move by Google. Basically what they do is drive a Street View Car which have lasers, cameras and GPS built-in. It travels through the city and places and captures “panoramic” images which are then made to a 360-degree view Street View.

Google Street View is not so popular in India, but yet we have major and historical places like Taj Mahal etc.

The latest fire is that Street View to coming to #Kochi!

Street View

The blue overlay shows where Street View imagery is available.

It was spotted in the “Behind The Scenes” page of Street View that Ernakulam is also shown in the map of “Where is Street View?”. Kochi is said to be the Next Bangalore in India and it’s true. On a high-level zoom we can see it’s overlaid on Pallimukku. There is no official reports or anything about this yet. Hopefully it will happen soon. When street view hits this city it’ll give a new face to Kochi.

My Moto G had KitKat (Android 4.4.2) running right out of the box which was really surprising! Moto G was one of few phone which got KitKat update first.. The “Project butter” and KitKat OS is really smooth on the Moto G.

Here is a video of Moto G speed test with Nexus 5! (which is a Rs.30K phone)

and, we can see that Moto G was only tiiinny bit slower than the giant Nexus 5!!

Moto G also support HEAVY games as well

Cannot hesitate to say but all these heavy games is running without any lags and “smoothly” on this budget phone!

Build quality: Build quality of this phone is really good! It feels very solid in hands. It is a very good advantage that it has Gorilla Glass 3 protection for the screen and I’ve literally tried scratching my Moto G with keys and not surprisingly it didn’t got scratched! And also Moto G is water repellent. Very comfy and useful for daily use!

Camera is the only “disappointing” department in the Moto G, but this is the BEST we can except from this exceptional (price) phone! Even though its 5 MP rear camera, the photos it takes are very satisfactory. It is way better than all 5MP cameras of Samsung. The shutter speed and features are also exceptional!

I’ve seen many bloggers say the camera is poor in night.

Photo taken using Moto G with LED flash

But. This image is taken only with the LED Flash light at night. It’s way better than all the mid-range phones delivering low-light images. Also gotta say the LED light is very powerful in the Moto G.

Storage: Moto G comes with 8/16GB variants, but the fact is that it does NOT support SD cards, it could be a bit disappointing to some users, but not a big drawback as this phone supports USB Flash drives with OTG! The Bluetooth reception is very good than even Galaxy S4! It was playing music without any beat skips through Bluetooth speakers at a long distance while other phones were having trouble.

Here is Read & Write speed test of Moto G.

I can say the performance is exceptionally good. It has even defeated the giant Galaxy S5!

Gaming:

I’ve been using Moto G for almost two weeks now and it still amuse me. I’ve tried high-end games like NFS Most Wanted (1.91 GB), TDKR (The Dark Knight Rises) (2.3GB) etc on my Moto G and I couldn’t litreally find any frame-drops or lags in those games considering its high graphics and size. The lightning effects and all on TDKR is awesome! The 720p HD Screen also helps the viewing effects. The Adreno 305 GPU is handing all the games very smoothly.

One thing I found while playing Games like NFS Most wanted, is that the Phone get very hot while playing (probably because it uses a lot of GPU&CPU). It could sometimes harm the phone’s battery in the long run. And also 30 Minutes of gameplay with NFS Most wanted resulted in 18% battery drop (as I tested).

TIP: Don’t play games while charging as phone gets too hot (due to CPU & charging) and we know that battery life would be affected when it works in very hot conditions.

This is the Best phone for gaming if you’re looking for a <Rs.15000 phone!

The Usual games like Temple Run, Subway Surfers, Deer Hunter, etc also runs very smoothly and the Graphical details (shadows, infos) can be seen very clearly on the 720p display.

What I miss in the Moto G:

  1. 4G LTE – (Even though India doesn’t have 4G coverage all over, I still miss this feature. 4G is gonna be everywhere soon!)
  2. NFC. – They could’ve put a NFC in the MotoG. I don’t think NFC chips is that expensive 😉
  3. Removable Battery – (Non-removable batteries are quite common now, so can’t complain much)
  4. 2GB RAM – I am very happy with the 1GB ram of MotoG. But in a long-run with lots of multi-tasking, 2GB of ram would’ve been a blessing!

Update: Motorola has Just released a 4G LTE model with Expandable storage! (Yet to arrive in India)

KitKat:

The another good news is that the Phone comes Android 4.4 (KitKat) out of the box! (Phones which are not stock KitKat can be upgraded to KitKat OTA easily)

KitKat have some great additional features and Memory Management than the prior version of Android. Learn More >>

In short, MOTO G is the BEST VFM (Value For Money) Phone out there in the market!
